Paideia homework:

The test on the honors project novel, Nectar in a Sieve, is on Friday, October 23. Be sure that you are keeping up with the reading. Remember that filling the character IDs on the reading guide as well as the boxes on the last page (traditions, ceremonies, etc.) will help you in understanding how all of the characters' lives intertwine. You may use this guide on the test.

The honors project--the trifold brochure--is due on Monday, October 26. Refer to the brochure giudelines and the rubric that we gave you. Things to remember:

  • The brochure must be generated from the computer--no handwritten brochures! If you need computer access at school, you are welcome to come to our room during SMART Lunch or after school. If you need to use our computer, please do not wait until the last minute to do so.
  • Pictures downloaded from the internet are fine. Your own drawings are fine (provided that you have artistic talent!), and if you glue them to the brochure, you will need to laminate the brochure so that the art does not part company from the pages.
  • You will need to research some of the topics for Ms. Van Dyke's part, but remember that the explanations need to be in YOUR OWN WORDS. You will not receive credit for anything that is "cut and pasted" into the explanations.
  • "Neat and pretty" always gives a better impression for a project than something that looks like you just threw it together at the last minute. Take the time to make your brochure look good!
  • When you are working with the thematic ideas on pages 5 and 6--Mrs. Meng's section--please THINK about the topic! Once you have read the book, the thematic ideas will make sense, and you should be able to write about them easily.
  • On pages 2-6, you MUST provide EXAMPLES from the novel to support your research or thoughts. You will lose points if the examples are not present--and clearly relevant to the topic.

Questions? See Ms. Van Dyke or Mrs. Meng well before the due date!

Paideia students! I had announced a unit test for Wednesday, October 7 on the African Literature that we just completed, but since the periods will be even shorter because of an assembly that day, I will have to reschedule the unit test. Hang in until I check with Ms. Van Dyke to see how we can shuffle our days! Sorry for the confusion--I just found out about the assembly!

English homework:

Continue the reading of Things Fall Apart this week. Chapters 14-19 (Part II) are due to be finished on Friday. We will take a reading quiz--focus on characters, places, events, changes that affect the community. The questions will be due that day. Because I may not have enough time to check them all in class, I will take up Part II GRQs (Guided Reading Questions) on the same day the following week that I take up Part III GRQs.

Chapters 20-25 (Part III)--reading and GRQs--will be due on Wednesday, September 30. I will take up the GRQs for Parts II and III that day!

World History homework:

Finish packet section on India, pages 7-11 of the packet. Due Thursday, September 24.

TEST ON THURSDAY on Ancient Civilizations. The test will be based on your packet pages 1-6 (basics of History through the Ancient Israelites) and on your class notes and readings. Focus especially on things we have done in detail in class, like cause and effect (cough *Neolithic Revolution* cough cough), compare/contrast, broad themes with universal relevance (like justice) and general ways to study civilizations, societies, and history.

You may use your packet on the test! However, most points will come from your ability to synthesize (not just recall) class content. Email with any questions!

You should list at least one cost and one benefit, with real life evidence to support each cost and benefit. Try to connect the lifestyle we live today with the development of systematic agriculture and domestication. Think of our lifestyle and its own strengths and problems today as a result of the Neolithic Revolution as your form your paragraph. This is not much writing, but will take a lot of independent thought! Give yourself time to THINK before you write. You will not be able to find the answer with a simple reading or google search.
